IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Why Proper Driveway Installation Matters

Installing a driveway isn’t just about laying blocks or tarmac — it’s about building a solid foundation that lasts. Every layer shown in the diagram plays a crucial role in ensuring your driveway is durable, level, and resistant to wear, weather, and movement over time.

Here's why following the correct process is so important:

  • Subgrade/Substrate Preparation:
This is the starting point and the most critical layer. A poorly prepared subgrade can lead to sinking, cracking, or movement of the driveway. It must be excavated to the correct depth and properly compacted.

  • Sub-base Layer (MOT Type 1):
The sub-base supports the entire structure. Using quality Type 1 aggregate and compacting it thoroughly helps distribute weight evenly and prevents settlement or rutting over time.

  • Laying Course (Sand Screed or Mortar Bed):
This ensures that the blocks or pavers sit evenly and remain stable. If done incorrectly, the surface can shift or become uneven.

  • Block Paving or Surface Material:
Whether it’s block paving, tarmac, or porcelain, the top layer needs to be laid accurately and with precision. Poor alignment or spacing can affect both the look and performance of the driveway.

  • Edge Restraints and Haunching:
These are essential to lock everything in place and prevent the edges from spreading or collapsing. Without proper edge restraints, your driveway can quickly lose its shape.

  • Drainage and Fall:
Ensuring the correct gradient (fall) allows water to drain away from your property, preventing pooling, damage, or long-term erosion.

At Burns & Sons Limited, we don’t cut corners. We follow industry best practices and use the correct materials at every stage to ensure your driveway is built to last — strong, safe, and visually stunning.
